Staying Fit in Sin City Vegas USA and the Suburbs of Crawley Town Centre UK

Staying Fit in Sin City Vegas USA -  Bridget : and Suburbs of Crawley Town Centre UK – Kay

So the beauty about being a poler and having an active blog brings you closer to people you would never normally meet in a million years

With a natural love of all sports, I am interested in reading how other athletes stay motivated and do what they do.
I received a lovely email from a recent ‘stranger,’ called Bridget.
So a break away from planning the World Pole Dance Championships 2014 !! I spare a few moments to read her article and compose mine.

Bridget wrote specifically about cycling, out door in Las Vegas and asked me, could I talk about what it's like in my city to do the exercise I love. Bridget stated she wants to try the pole soon too . so how could I refuse another possible poler!!

Staying Fit in Sin City Vegas USA -  Bridget

I used to workout in the gym all the time. After work, I would go over to the gym  and workout until 8 or 9. I believed in putting in the hours, that’s for sure. It was close quarters and there was a lot of sweat, most of which was not my own, but I kept at it because I felt I had to. That was the way to the perfect body: sweating along with the other folks and doing endless crunches, squats, and dead lifts. I never understood how people just ran. I would see them all the time, running along paths or on sidewalks, running like they were content and looking good while doing it. Or the ones who biked everywhere – to the store, to work, you name it. They were fit, but the idea always made me nervous. Cars, for one thing. Pollution was another. Breathing in all the crud that fills our air day in and day out – I don’t know, it just didn’t seem like the healthiest option for exercise. But then I moved. Once I got  to Vegas I realized that working out outside is actually something I really enjoy. It’s freeing in a way that I hadn’t thought was possible. Las Vegas brought the nature  buff out in me. Here is my story:

When I first moved to Las Vegas, I was game to try working out outside. The air quality was better – remarkably so – and I wanted to give it a try. But when you think of Las Vegas, exercise isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, unless you count walking the strip at all hours of the night as cardio. It only took a little bit of research for me to find out that Las Vegas has a slew of natural, scenic areas to get your workout on.

Las Vegas is right in the middle of the Mojave, which has miles of bike trails cutting through the gorgeous terrain. When you get started, use this reference guide to find safe bike trails. It’ll keep you from getting lost out there!

Here’s something else that’s pretty cool about Las Vegas: it was named one of America’s Cycle-Friendly Cities by the League of American Bicyclists! It’s just

another draw to this awesome area. When you live here you can see it. The city invested a ton of money in bike trails and locks. They made biking here a serious

activity instead of something to play at, which is very cool. Next time you come to Las Vegas, try this resource to find fitness-friendly hotels.

The let’s you look for hotels that fit your needs. When I was trying out the place to make sure I really wanted to move to Vegas, I used the site and it was really

helpful. They had lots of activities and accommodations listed with state of the art gyms inside and also gave lots of advice on where to go to work out outdoors.

There’s also a lot of health conscious restaurants cropping up out here. It gives you the option to eat healthy even thou you are in Sin City.

Staying Fit with the relatively controversial Pole Dance for fitness techniques

As an active mum of three and choosing pole as my first option to stay fit during my busy life nurturing three teenage children, it doesn’t need much explaining as to the challenges I have met along the way during my 13 years stint on and around the pole.
As a pioneer in pole fitness techniques ive had to be thick skinned, ive always taken the approach that pole isn’t for everyone and never will be but then neither is cycling or jogging or rock climbing.
I actually love the fact that people raise their eyebrows when I say im a pole fitness expert training the trainers and creating something new for the indoors and outdoors.

Yes you could say im obsessed so much so ive worked and invested all my time (and money) to the development of the out door pole – the free standing Rpole so this enables me and thousands of other like minded people to pole outdoors
My brief to my husband – the engineer behind the most portable free standing pole in the world was please make it light enough for me to carry but strong  and stable enough for me to play and train on too – any where and everywhere

Well years later we did it – certainly with lots of blood, sweat and tears and the occasional sequin and high heels too!!
The fact is I love to pole everywhere, in the gym, on the beach, in the field, in the home, the adrenaline of when you feel those glazing eyes at you – It makes me work harder (just like I used to get when I was lifting weights next to the men in the ‘strong man section,’ in the gym - viewers never having seen moves on and around the vertical bar before – Yes you could say I love to show off – but I don’t see it as that, I see it as performing!!
After all my love of the stage is deeply set within me  and I love to set new standards too.  As an educator and mentor I love the responsibility I have set myself and ringing in my ears from my English school days, in the words of William Shakespeare, - 'All the World's a Stage'!!

For me poling in the parks is something new for the younger generation of polers, many using the children’s playground for make shift vertical bars just like skate boarding parks and  roller skating down Brighton pier, what better way to keep fit with the fresh air around us and no !!  I'm not wearing thigh highs and a g sting – although thinking about it ……….. maybe next year when the sun is out!!!!!!

Worlds class pole dancers from all over the world head for Crawley Hawth theatre February 01st 2014

World Pole Dance Organisation Hawth Theatre February 01st 2014 www.worldpoledance.com

Our vision has always been since 2000, to make sport and fitness more compelling, challenging and fun, and we knew immediately that the techniques incorporated in pole dance, once removed from negative public perception as only fit for gentlemen’s clubs, would open up a new and exciting generation of polers, not to mention extremely challenging form of fitness and dance.

Yes we dared to be different and break from the normal.

In 2005, we organised the very first ‘Miss Pole Dance UK’  event in Brighton with the view that by making a public display of the dance form, in the form of a national competition, we could 'open closed minds', educate and change the hearts and minds of people who held a negative association with pole dance as a form of sport or fitness.
In 2007 we secured funding from the then (government department) DTi (Department of Trade and industry) to investigate pole dance as a future sport fitness. The result of this was, that due to negative public perception this could take anything between 5-8 years to become a sport found within national health club chains. The following year we were awarded accreditation for pole fitness from Skills Active which officially accredits and recognises our pole fitness instructor training courses and sessions as a form of fitness and we now are one of Europe’s leading and largest training providers organising and teaching new trainers and coaches from around the world.

It is now noted that an exceptional level of skill is required, however still with a public perception of a sleazy activity, we would completely disagree with this statement as now we find this perception is in the minority.

We question -  Should we continue to hide our art away, on the basis that people have an INCORRECT perception of it? Or should we go out there and show people what it is REALLY is about, show people the athleticism involved, show people the artistic interpretations of music in choreographed performances, incorporating the influences of ballet, salsa, gymnastics, Pilates, and contemporary dance? How do we change perceptions if we do not showcase the reality of what these performers do?

Our vision hasn't changed since we started World Pole Dance – incorporating what has become a world wide activity for fitness and dance and by operating World Class and National  events for the public eye, we are encouraging more people to get active and try a new sport which in the majority is everyone's thinking, must be for the greater good?

Anyone is welcome to visit our Pole Fitness class at Nuffield Health and Wellbeing centre in Crawley on Friday & Monday  evenings – come and see what pole fitness really involves. This way you can receive a fully informed view of what our classes incorporate.

Some questions we asked Kay

When did you get into pole?
The year 2000 after the birth of my third son. I was searching for a new type of fitness that would help me mentally and physically to get back into shape

How did you get into pole?
I started before Pole Fitness was ever created and heard of – I attended a private party where there was a pole! No one else had a look in.. I was hooked the moment I tried it. I just moved around the pole like no one was watching and naturally thought I was a goddess!! I then attended a 3 hour introduction to Pole way back in the day when we used to wear heels!

Sexy or fitness or both?
My background is fitness and dance from a very early age so I love to combine the two – that’s what I love about pole is that you can tailor it to how you want to depending on your mood at the time – some of the movements CAN make you feel more sexy – so watch out!

Favourite pole move?
It's got to be the cross ankle release (upside down move with the legs crossed and gripping the pole – no hands!)

Least favourite pole move and why?
It’s got to be the Iguana as it hurts under my arm on my bicep. (Back arch gripping your whole body weight with just your inner arm and torso)

Interests outside of pole?
Pole has become my world but I’m also a busy mum of three teenagers – I love to keep fit so anything that challenges me I love to do. I  love anything to do with music too from classical concerts to the rock concerts at the O2 arena. I’m passionate about new experiences too and hanging around positive and motivational people who help me grow as an individual

POLE PASSION THE BOOK COMING SOON polepassion.com

Pole Passion  - The BOOK  and syllabus 1-6 www.polepassion.com

Pole Passion the moves and grooves series of books are in the final stages of completion
Syllabus 1-6
After an exciting and innovative 13 years’ worth of moves, tricks, transitions, spins and poses, this will be a celebration of the years Pole Passion has lead the pole dance and fitness industry.

Author Kay Penney has dedicated the last decade and more to promoting the ambitious and supporting the talented. She is founder of Miss Pole Dance and World Pole Dance and is the owner and founder of Pole Passion Ltd established in the UK in 2001 – Kay has always had the belief that movements on and around a vertical bar, for fun and fitness, would be massive and wanted to make the techniques available to all. Kay who still teaches and mentors thousands of students, competitors and instructors worldwide, is an active member of experts, within the Pole Passion team, on a daily basis, leading the way for competitive pole sports and fitness and is proud to have created and promoted 5 world champions; Felix Cane - USA, Alesia Vazmitsel - Belarus, Keem Martinez - France, Evgeny Grishilov – Russia & Natalia Tatarintseva- Ukraine
The books have always been an integral part of the Pole Passion ethos and professional training system, first created, with her then Advanced Instructor Debbie Merchant in 2004.

From a team of one, Kay and her dedicated team, now over 29 instructors and regular teaching team members continue to inspire and motivate men and women all over  the world. Kay also has shared her instructor training programmes with Russia, Switzerland, USA, Germany and Hungary to name a few

Kay decided to document her ideas and programmes when she was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and has never looked back – Visit the website for more details about the events, competitions and programmes Kay and her team are involved in.
It’s all about giving back and offering a choice.

Kay is currently full time in bringing the World Championships to the UK on January 31st , February 1st and 2nd ; a convention and celebration of world class pole

NEW Worthing Pole fitness classes with Pole Passion

Elyse Donovan – Worthing’s New Pole Passion instructor 2014
I have students travelling as far as Shoreham, Lancing, Findon, Patching, Ferring and Steyning

Hello, my name is Elyse, I'm 33 years old and I started to learn pole fitness after I had my first baby in 2009.
I am an accredited pole fitness instructor with Pole Passion.
After lesson one, I was totally addicted. It got me back in shape after having my son, but it also made me stronger and fitter than before.  I was itching to get back to pole after my second baby in 2012 and I decided to apprentice and take the next step to becoming an instructor.  I would love to pass this passion on to others in my classes.

My open day is coming up on 14 December 2014 at Northbrook Barn in Durrington, and I hope that curious people will pop along to see what pole classes are all about.  It will be a chance to see more experienced polers at work which will inspire beginners and new comers alike.

My lessons are for beginners and will help people to get fit, strong and body confident in a fun environment.  I'm an 80's baby, so expect some retro tunes in class!  As long as you are over 16 you can do pole no matter what shape or size you are.  It’s like no other exercise most people will have tried before, so if you want a new challenge for the new year, give it a try - you'll love it!

Classes from 6th Jan 2014 on Monday nights 6.30-7.30pm and
Tuesday lunchtimes 12.00 -1.00pm.

Some questions we asked Elyse

When did you get into pole?
After my first baby was born in 2009 when I was 29 years old.

How did you get into pole?
I wanted try something new. I saw an open day invitation and thought - why not!

Sexy or fitness or both?
I'm a fitness girl, but there's nothing wrong with a cheeky routine here and there!!

Favourite pole move?
It's got to be the straight edge. (upside handstand with both hands on the pole)
I was desperate to get that move and when I did I got a real sense of achievement.

Least favourite pole move and why?
My nemesis was the cradle spin ( this is sideways spinning movement around the pole with the legs in a tuck position and arms stretched wide gripping the pole) - it took me 9 months to get it.

Interests outside of pole?
I'm a mum of two, so my boys keep me very busy, but I love to have a good night in with the girls when I can.
