Interview with Rachel Tolzman Miss Pole Dance UK Professional champions 2017

Miss Pole Dance UK winner Thank you, Kay Penney!! I'm still on a high from this past weekend. It was such a surreal moment! Here are my responses to the interview:

1) It feels incredible to have won MPDUK because it is such a prestigious competition and attracts so many talented and strong athletes. I've trained immensely for this moment, and I was excited to share my work on the stage and aim to perform to the best of my abilities. So, winning was a very special moment, one that I won't forget.

2) The high point of the evening was hearing my name being called as winner of MPDUK 2017! Hands down!

3) I would like to thank you, Kay and Angela, for organizing this wonderful event and providing such an amazing platform for pole dancers to showcase and celebrate our achievements. I would also like to thank all my students, friends and colleagues who wished me well and came to support. And lastly my family and wonderful husband who supports my endeavors completely and bare the burden of being at the receiving end of all the different emotions that arise during comp training! They give me strength and courage to continue following my passion and crazy dreams.

4) Most often I get my inspiration from the music I've chosen for a routine. I'm always drawn to music that has meaningful lyrics, something that could tell a story and something that has great instrumentation or a catchy beat. If the song gives me goosebumps whilst I listen to it and envision dancing to it, I know it's the right choice.

5) The incomparable Fi Bourke! The aim was to make me into a hummingbird and I think she truly nailed it. It was an honor to wear one of her creations!

Thanks again and I look forward to competing in World Pole Sport & Fitness (China 2018)- and coming back next year to MPDUK 2018!!

All the best,
Rachel xx

Jess Leanne Norris tells all, how she prepared to take the title once more - Miss Pole Dance UK Double FIRST PLACE title winner

Jess Leanne Norris, Miss Pole Dance UK Professional champion, tells all how she prepared to take the title the second time.  The only person in the UK to do this so far at Miss Pole Dance UK

1/ What does this win mean to you?
I’m So Happy!!! Winning this Year’s Miss Pole Dance means a lot to me! I always wanted to compete in this competition again to hopefully win the title back! & I’m so Chuffed I did it!!!
2/ How old were you when you first got into pole fitness?
I was 14 when I got a Pole up at Home and started Self Teaching through watching Videos on YouTube.
3/ What was the hardest thing about performing?
I think the hardest thing about performing this routine was how much pressure I put on myself to do well, I felt so nervous on the day! but as soon as I’d finished, I just wanted to get back on Stage to do it all over again! Ha!
4/ How did you feel when your name was announced as this year’s winner?
I can’t quite put it into Words how I felt!! I was so happy and Proud of my little self!! All the Hard Work paid off!!
5/ What is your next step from this competition?
No Rest for the Wicked as My next Goal is the World Championships!!
6/ Do you have a favourite move?
My Favourite Pole Move overall would be the Eagle! Its Such a Pretty move!! But the one I do like to Perform the Most would be the Scorpio Cocoon!
7/ How do you prepare for such a big performance?
Once I knew I wanted to compete, I started Training EVERY Day! Working on different Moves and Combos to figure out what I wanted to put in my routine, then 6 Weeks before the day, I started putting the Routine together to Work on My Stamina. The Week of Comp I Trained My Routine 2x a Day, in the Morning then Again in the Evening.
8/ What was your favourite part of your Miss Pole Dance UK experience?
I actually couldn't point out one thing… As I loved the Whole Experience!! I really enjoyed teaching My Workshop in the Morning as everyone did AMAZING and was Such a Pleasure to Teach!! Being Backstage was such a Chilled Atmosphere & everyone was so Supportive of one another! Then being on that Stage with all those Flashing Spot Lights and hearing Everyone Cheering was so surreal!!

9/ What would you change if you could relive the whole thing all over again from deciding to enter to being announced winner on day?
Well… There was One Trick in My routine that I wasn’t overly confident about and was still practising it on the day! Which made me feel even more nervous than normal! So if I’d change anything I would have practised that move a lot, lot more!
10/ Do you have a special diet to help you train?
I don’t have a Special diet to help me train as such, I just try to eat Healthy! I’d rather have ABS than Eat Take-Always and Cakes etc.. ;-)
11/ Has pole changed your life? If so how?
Pole has completely taken over my life! I Live & Breathe it!! I run my own studio which is a 24/7 job as well as training most days, Travelling Teaching My Workshops and Performing… Pole is Full time for me, but I wouldn't change it for the World!! It’s My Dream!
12/ What does Pole Dance/Fitness mean to you?
(Think I have explained this in the question above)
13/ Who or what motivates you?
My Pole Friends keep me Motivated! I don’t like training on my own as it can be Boring! So training with the Girls Keeps me going!!
14/ Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
Felix Cane was my very first Inspiration! I loved watching her performances and was always in complete Awe!! And still am, she really is something else!!  But there are just SO Many good polers out there now, Men, Woman and Kids!! That all keep my Inspired with all their Pics and Videos that go up on the Internet!!
15/ Have you ever felt like giving it all up?
Oh I couldn’t count on 2x hands at how many times I’ve wanted to give it all in! Mainly when I’ve had a Bad training session or when I can’t get a Certain Move first time!! Ha!  When I’m having one of those days, I just go home, have a Nice Hot bath and Chill out!
16/What words of advice would you give to people just coming into the world of Pole?
My Advice to Anyone New to Pole is to be Patient… Pole is HARD! The more Effort and time you put into it, the quicker you Progress! It isn’t Easy! But Most of all… to just enjoy the Journey!!! :-D
Thank you!!!

Ian Matthews Runner up Mr Pole Fitness UK 2013

Ian Matthews Congratulations again for coming Second in the Mr Pole Fitness UK 2013 Male Championships Competition, you should be very proud of yourself, I know we are.  We would greatly appreciate your feed back on how you are feeling about your achievement so we can let the rest of the pole community know.

· How does it feel to be runner up in the Mr Pole Fitness Champions UK 2013?

I'm ecstatic to have placed 2nd in MPF 2013! Congrats to all the placed winners!
I'm very fond of this particular competition and the amazing team in Pole Passion that run this fab event, so it was an absolute pleasure to be competing on that stage once again!

· Did you go in it to win it?
I hadn't competed since last year’s event, and the level of ability in male competitors in the UK has sky rocketed in recent times!  So I went in just wanting to be happy overall with my performance which I was! And hopefully it made my supporters proud!

· Are you classically dance trained?
I originally came a dance background in street dance for over 10 years. One of the many things that pole has done for me since I started, is now I embrace many more dance styles and love how they can interact in this art!

· How long have you been Pole Dancing for?
For about 41/2 years now.

· What made you get into it?
I helped choreograph and co-perform a dance routine for someone who was  performing at a pole competition. It was the first pole competition I had ever seen and after being blown away by what I was seeing from these talented competitors on the vertical bar, I was inspired to begin myself, and add my own elements of dance style to it! I haven't looked back since!

· Has this competition given you a hunger to compete in more competitions?
I'm glad, but also sorry to say that MPF 2013 was my last competitive performance!
I have competed in a fair few competitions since starting and I feel the time is now right for me to focus completely on instruction for my students and my Master class held throughout the UK. I want to pass on my knowledge and experience on to them and any up and coming pole competitors!

· What advice would you give to anyone who has never competed before?
If you want to take your pole training to a high level, then I would say it is definitely something to experience at least once. It's good to have something to work towards!  For a performance, my advice would be to focus on a theme and music piece that you can connect to emotionally and that has personal meaning to you. Then you will find that emotion will be portrayed on the stage. Lastly, make sure you are doing it for 'YOU' and for your growth as a performer, not just because you just want a title.

· Do you have a Pole Idol?
I don't have any specific pole idols really! I have met and have so much respect for many pole artist's from all over the world and I love to see the many styles that are performed now!

· Were you nervous on the day of the competition?
Personally, I find that my previous experience with performing on stage in my dance career has taught me to not let nerves get the better of me. I suppose I've learnt to focus the nervous tension!
I know how hard it is in the beginning of a performing career and getting up on a big stage is scary!, but in time, a regular performer will gain that focus.

Alesia commented, ‘ I was so happy to see ordinary people coming to me at the end of the show and saying how beautiful pole dance could be.
