How old do I have to be to pole dance?

How old can my daughter be to start pole dancing for fitness?

We have set the age range from 16 plus in line with what our gyms want for our classes.
We will however allow 15 year olds to attend with their parent/guardian’s consent :)

We have these guidelines of 16 + as a moral guideline for our sessions is our professional answer

Our unprofessional answer would be - Just so we don't get any confused and upset weirdoes attacking us for being irresponsible people attracting girls into the sex industry!!  Soooo 1980’s

There is nothing in our syllabus that we teach that is offensive, in fact we go out of our way to make everyone comfortable with their choice of pole for their exercise and dance regime

Come along and see for yourself and that there is not anything remotely sexy during our hard physical training sessions of flexibility, core strength and coordination -   apart from the odd  body swerve ( if you choose!') - you see worse on Got to Dance from 8 year olds !!

Come and join us for fun and fitness – if you love a challenge

Pole Dancing Olympic style with Miss Pole Dance UK 2012

Pole Athletes gathered Olympic style at the recent Miss Pole Dance UK Awards on July 22nd at Taylors Pole Retreat in Dorking where the annual MPD UK amateur and semi pro championships were held all day

The competitions hosted by industry leaders Pole Passion are judged on many technicalities which include performance, artistic interpretation, flexibility, strength, choreography, power and fluidity. And the main aim other than providing a professional platform for the many competitors to show case their art  and skill to their family, friends and other pole enthusiast who travelled from all over the country to watch; is also about education – moving it from its  origins of gentleman’s clubs to the relatively new and challenging sport now worthy of the Olympics

Miss Pole Dance UK, created by Kay Penney in  2004, is proud to be instrumental in changing people’s perceptions is now in its 7th year, growing from strength to strength, promoting the ambitious and very talented athletes on and around the vertical bar, attracting  now international acrobats and gymnasts.
Kay who organised and compared the three competitions  and its full day of events including Master classes from; Miss Pole Dance professional champion 2012 Sarah Scott and Mr Pole Fitness UK Champion 2012 Nico Modestine, performances from the World Pole Sport & Fitness champion 2011 Evegeny Greshilov from Russia, Kat and Tiff Miss Pole Dance UK Doubles Trick champions – congratulated all the competitors on the day along with their sponsors, judges and all that attended; which was supported by over 4 00 guests including top pole athletes; Keem Martinez, French national professional champion and Anastasia Skukhtorova Russia Pole Dance champion, Deb Riley UK champion.

Kay Penney Pole Competition experience 2001 - 2012

Kay Penney - One of the first pole dance for fitness instructors in the UK and world, who started practicing pole dance techniques in 2001 soon after the birth of her third child as a new fun way to remain in shape mentally and physically, innovating and pioneering the UK pole industry.
As a dance, health and beauty  expert and fitness professional, for now over 25 years, from the very early age, Kay Penney has made Pole now her sole dance and fitness passion.  she is co-inventor of the RPole, the first ever free standing, light weight, portable pole designed specifically for the gym environment and pole fitness  programmes and accredited instructor training she developed in 2008, awarding students the highest awards in the industry from foundational courses to Master trainer status.

Kay has spent the last 10 years continually creating, networking internationally, supporting and promoting all pole athletes across the world working with different cultures and ethics, with her simple mission and message in mind – that to allow all to showcase their art of pole dance and passion on a world stage without the fear of being wrongly judged.
She created her own pole business in 2003 'Pole Passion Ltd', which is known across the globe and went on to create the largest and most respected pole competition in the UK, Miss Pole Dance UK, following on adding all categories, amateur and semi pro divisions, including the first Male championships, Mr Pole Fitness UK in 2009, culminating in the creation of World Pole Sport & Fitness Championships – World Pole Dance in 2009 in Jamaica.

She continues to have a daily and very active role in her business’ supporting women and men in this chosen genre, and is proud to have her burlesque instructor training certifications accredited in the UK for fitness too.

To Strip or Not to Strip? - The History - Miss Pole Dance UK

Picture of Elena Gibson the first Miss Pole Dance UK professional champion

Stripping or Costume Change??
The History - Miss Pole Dance UK 2010

To strip or not to strip this is the question?

In 2005 there was controversy in the newly acclaimed Pole Dance competition industry (now being introduced for fun and fitness!!) - This ruling, in the inaugural Miss Pole Dance UK Professional category and competition held in Brighton, a new competition created specifically not placed in the gentleman’s clubs to help educate and formulate a more professional and accepted art form and image, and was in fact designed primarily to be more for ladies eyes only!!

It was decided that the act of clothing removal could be deemed as ‘stripping’. Which is what the organisers of Miss Pole Dance Organisation, headed by Kay Penney, founder of Miss Pole Dance UK (2005) and subsequently Miss Pole Dance Amateur ( 2008), Semi Pro categories (2010) and Mr Pole Fitness (2009) , defiantly wanted to move away from, as to become more accepted and to divert the eyes more towards the technicalities of the art form as opposed to the nakedness of the female form which was definitely apparent in the early days of Pole technique and Pole Competitions pre 2005 –

In 2006, however, it was decided by the organisation there needed to be a distinct clarification between ‘stripping’ and ‘costume change and or removal’ during the pole presentations and competitions.

The organisation was mindful that the use of elaborate, flowing and decorative costumes definitely enhanced pole performances at competition level, creating more interest for the viewer and the use of costumes on and around a pole was definitely a technique that requires skill and exact precision. Not only adjusting moves carefully and calculating, where limbs are safely placed around the pole:- where the material does not inhibit the safe grip on the pole. Questions were also asked by judges during the costume change, as to whether the fluidity of the routine has been compromised.

Where a candidate may score more for creativity and presentation with a glamorous and eye catching costume, may in fact loose points for a poor and non fluid routine and techniques due to the costume change and removal!
Most importantly we also have to consider the health and safety factors of the competitor when using clothing and indeed props, within a routine, on and round the pole – Clothing could also be a main slipping and tripping hazard or may attach and trap limbs to the pole too!!

This was very evident by one contestant in the preliminaries at the World Championships, held in Zurich this year, 2010, where officials were at hand to step in a t a moments notice had her costume thread not snapped as it wound around her limbs as she was suspended high on the pole, apparently unaware and ablivious as to the seriousness this may have been.

Will the outer costume come loose during a performance and become tangled? Will it entangle around the person and or the pole during rotations, especially on fast spinning poles? Which could be extremely dangerous too? For example, this could cause strangulation or attachment of a limb that needs to be freed suddenly and quickly during a complicated move or combinations of moves and prohibit a proper and secure execution and grip.

The clarification was set that if outer clothing or over garments are to be removed during, before or after a routine this must be done in a NON sexual way –The definition and meaning of stripping –To allure your audience in a sexual manner, to entice and tease your audience!! (hence the word - strip tease) and at Miss Pole Dance we believe is definitely more suited in a more traditional burlesque routine!!

This non stripping ruling is still in effect today in many pole competitions across the world and of course only applies to outer garments There also is a very strict ruling of no exposure, either accidential or on purpose! of the bottom (g string underwear effect), groin or breasts (exposure of nipples), which very rarely happens luckily.
However, since Elena Gibson, the very first Miss Pole Dance UK 2005 professional champion was ‘stripped’ of her world championship title in 2005 in Amsterdam, for this same ruling after it was claimed, allegedly, she was found admitting to ‘stripping’ on video camera after her official crowing!! For removing her tutu in her transition from a ballerina to a rock pole chick. One of which was embarrassing for the organisation to retract her official title after being awarded in front of a very large crowd and devastating for her as a professional competitor too, who had obviously worked hard on her pioneering and award winning routine.

The ruling and word ‘prohibited’, is used within the Miss Pole Fitness UK Amateur category level, which we have been successfully running as an organisation since 2008where the competitor, who is new to competitions and indeed pole, who’s main focus is on her strength building, variety and uniqueness of tricks at beginner, intermediate and advanced level, developing her own individuality around the pole, all excluding inverts! – which we believe is actually quite difficult to do as (poling for under one year in a non teaching capacity) creativity is challenged and stretched , combinations, techincalities, lines flexibility and presentations of moves on the floor and pole as a performer in a choreographed set sequence of moves all set and interpreted to their own music choice all in less complicated costumes!! The focus therefore being mainly on technicalities of pole moves. The candidates’ extensions, lines, technique incorporating not only the height of the pole but the floor work and circumference of the pole too. Combinations are explored too – all the fundamentals of Semi Pro and the Professional categories – ones that are very much easily forgotten once the ability, challenge and fun is often found in the inverts!!

In the new category introduced this year, the Semi Pro, this particular ruling is a little more relaxed and a candidate is not disqualified for costume removal, as long as it is not done in an alluring and sexual manner, which runs through the whole 3 judging elements of their routine of course.

1) Presentation - 5 marks maximum
2) Performance of dance and or fitness – 10 marks maximum
3) Tricks – 15 marks maximum

The organisation reserves the right to change its rulings yearly as the industry continues to develop and evolve, as the main society accepts and acknowledges the true art form pole creates and as this being the first year of Semi Pro - we will be allowing costume change in the future at Semi Pro level.

At Miss Pole Dance UK Professional level, costume change is also permitted.

Kay Penney of Pole Passion interview by Pole Skivvies USA

Alescia Vazmitsel 2008/2009 Miss Pole Dance UK and World Pole Dance 2009 No 3 champion
Tracey Simmonds Performing in Miss Pole Dance UK 2008
Maxine Betts Miss Pole Dance UK 2009 champion

Kay Penney is the founder of Pole Passion, which hosts Miss Pole Dance UK and the World Pole Dance Championships.

Pole Passion runs several different pole dance competitions.
Miss Pole Dance UK Professional category (professional as in standard of moves)
Miss Pole Dance Amateur - Beginners in pole dance, fitness and performance
Mr Pole Fitness - categories specific to males only
Doubles in all categories
World Pole Dance - www.worldpoledance.com

How did it all begin, and which competitions are coming up?
Miss Pole Dance UK came from the ideas in 2004. I have a performance and acting background and was quite new to pole competitions then (as there were not many around ). I was let down by the organising company who ran the very first competition I entered – “Pole Idol” back in 2004 – bad management, bad communication, unprofessionally run! I felt I could do better. I only wanted to create an opportunity for ladies like me to shine on stage without the fear of being wrongly judged, never dreaming they would be so popular as they are today.

We have just ran the first Mr. Pole Fitness UK competition on 4th October. Then we had the big one – Miss Pole Dance UK 2009 professional category on October 25. This has run since 2005 and is probably the largest and most established and prestigious pole competition in the UK.
The world championships are next - Felix is the current world champion Australia, Jeneyne is No 2 representing USA and Alesia is No3 in the world representing UK

Can you give us the details on how one becomes a contestant?
The competition is open to all, professional and amateurs. It was always my aim not to prevent anyone from entering who had the passion – and skill, of course. All ladies who reside in the UK, who are over the age of 18 on the day of the competition. A pre-audition selection process takes place in which all applicants must submit a 3-4 minute routine, either in person or via video clip, to the selection committee where the performances are assessed.

What are the judging criteria and who are the judges?
We have quite a complicated judging criteria with very strict rulings and procedures to create and maintain professionalism. I believe, by continually adapting as the industry has adapted, maintaining this process has been very influential in the success of the competitions. The judges are well-respected individuals within the fitness and pole dance domain. This year we are pushing the boundaries yet again by introducing one of the UK top osteopaths and chartered physiotherapists as our concentration is on health and safety on and around the pole from a musculoskeletal point of view. Apparently, we have created a bit of a stir within the osteopaths’ association.
check out pole passion for more details

How do people get tickets to watch the competitions?
We are promoting the ticket sales via theteam@polepassion.com + 44 (0) 1293 888 200,
www.seetickets.com 24hr hotline 0871 2200260, and www.ticketweb.co.uk 08700 600100.

What got you, personally, into pole dancing?

A drive to do something different that would challenge me mentally and physically. And, at the time of beginning pole dance and fitness, as a fitness professional I was in a stage of my life where I needed an unconventional challenge, something that would help reinstate my self-esteem and boost my inner confidence, which incidentally I was lacking hugely. I was searching for a newfound fun, something I could do for myself. I had a desire to explore my sensuality, which I felt I had lost after the birth of my third child.

Favorite makeup tip:
Hummm … as a qualified beauty therapist, my favourite makeup tip has to be eyeliner and lip gloss. I tend not to leave the house without it. As a busy working mum, I unfortunately don’t have huge amounts of time to do the full makeup routine. I leave that for special occasions.

Barefoot, sneakers, or platform heels?
Ohhh, can I choose all three – I believe in multi tasking and promote that a modern women has the ability to wear several hats (or even shoes!!).

Favorite grip enhancer:
I must admit I haven’t had the opportunity to try them all, so if all the grip enhancers out there would like to send me a sample I would be willing to do an analysis on them all. However, the ones I have tried – Mighty Grip, Gorilla Gold, Sur Grip (no longer in production), Dry hands, Itac – I have them all in my instructor bag as there are pros and cons on them all (was that answer diplomatic enough?). It depends on my mood, the pole’s mood, and the weather, of course!!

Pole dance move that made you proudest to learn:
It has to be my first ankle release – the first invert move I did, within four weeks of learning the pole (I was on an intensive crash course for a TV show at the time). The thrill of going upside down and not falling was amazing.

Pole dance pet peeves:
Nope, sorry, I don’t have any.

Favorite treatment for bruises and sore muscles:
For bruising it has to be good old arnica and a reassessment of pole technique. And for sore muscles – work harder. Oh sorry, I mean rest and relaxation and a wonderful deep tissue massage.

Who would you most like to have in the audience at your competitions?

www.polepassion.com all pictures copyright Pole Passion Ltd
www.worldpoledance.com

For me, when I developed the competitions, it was always with women in mind for the audience (at the time of innovation I felt the men had their shows and events in the gentlemen’s clubs). Miss Pole Dance was always about women. For me, success was having 50/50 men and women in the audience. Miss Pole Dance now I feel has 80% women/20% men in the audience so I feel I have succeeded. It was never about volume, incidentally. That was just a bonus (900 – sell out, in the audience last year at Miss Pole Dance UK).

Who would you most like to have compete?
Competitors come from all backgrounds – for me, anyone who is so passionate about the art of pole they shine on stage. Obviously, acrobatics, ballet dancers and gymnasts inspire me the most due to their amazing flexibility, grace and poise, but honestly anyone has the capabilities to compete – variety and originality are the spice of competing.

Actually, one day I would love to think that my daughter will compete (she’s 15 and still very much influenced by her peers). She is quietly inspired by both Felix and Pantera.

Who is your hero or role model?
My mum (who died a year and a half ago through an awful illness of cancer of the liver). She has taught me so much in my life. Jacqueline Gold of Ann Summers who faced challenges as I did in the early days of promoting pole dance and fitness.

What are your favorite words of encouragement?
Empowerment, confidence, fitness & FUN! Fun in caps, as that is my main focus in life.

Favorite pizza toppings:
Prawns and fresh herbs.

Cupcakes or ice cream?
Home made cupcakes AND ice cream.

Anything else you’d like to share:
I would like to thank everyone who supports me, especially my family and friends who sacrifice a lot for my full time passion, and to all those people who send me lovely wishes and to say I am so privileged to work in an industry with such lovely people.

Pole Fitness Uniform

Pole Fitness Uniform
In response to Sam Remmer's Blog from the Art of Dance and with reference to Glamourpuss and the Volley Ball Olympic uniform - what are we worrying about girls!! Let's be proud of who we are and who we consistantly inspire on a daily basis.. our response to Sam's uniform blog:

Hi Sam, great to discover and identify a 'pole fitness' uniform which can obviously be accentuated with wrist sweat bands, used sometimes instead of gloves to absorb the moisture from the palms of the hands by wiping the hand across the band during a transition move or pose, not recommended during mid spin or invert! Leg warmers again have been supported by some pole fitness professionals, however these may inhibit climbing and secure ankle gripping (used in tricks such as, the ankle release and inverted hand stand for example). The introduction of gloves is a brilliant idea and have been in use by many pole fitness professionals and more and more participants are definitely using them with our pole school. Gloves are very much an important consideration for a much safer grip which in turn creates more confidence for the participant which will increase a more speedy progression.
As for the snap and spin... Pantera will hopefully be coming October time to teach all!! Watch this space

See you all soon.. Hugs
