Superman Pole Workshop hosted by Pole Passion Advanced Instructor Sue Thompson Budapest 2014

Superman Pole Workshop hosted by Pole Passion Advanced Instructor Sue Thompson - Budapest Internation Pole Passion Retreat 2014
www,polepassion.com - www.poepassion-events.com

Is Superman your pole kryptonite?

Do you love it or hate it?
Can your thighs handle 90mins of transitions into and out of this essential pole move?
Are you (super) man enough?

Often avoided by students and instructors because it can be (shall we say) a little uncomfortable on the inner thigh area, the Superman move is a beautiful pose with enough transitions in and out to be included in any routine.

Suitable for those who are comfortably inverting, this workshop will focus on identifying individual student strengths and utilising them to create tidy, seamless and (slightly less uncomfortable) superman transitions.

For those who have yet to master the move we will look at three different ways into it and safe controlled ways out.

For those of you more comfortable with the move, we will look at a few more advanced ways into it and some more daring ways out.

For those that are super(man) confident we have some fun doubles and assisted versions to try.

So.. Can you (super) man up and take the pain?

Everyone who gets through the workshop and can walk out unaided gets a free Superman Tshirt*

If you have any questions just get in touch.   theteam@passion-fitness.com
Hope to see you there!

Sue xx

*super powers not included

Superwoman craft section

Has your workshop left you walking like a (super) man?

Are you feeling bruised, pumped and unfeminine?

Come along to our 'Pimp My Shirt' workshop and customise your superman shirt to reveal your inner (super) woman.

This session will be an opportunity to adapt your shirt. Perhaps just with a 'I'm too super for this shirt' rip or knot

Or perhaps full on fabric pens, bling, sequins and crystals.
Whatever your style, join us in this informal creative session.
Some craft materials will be supplied but please feel free to bring your own sewing materials, scissors and glue.

A must have Tshirt accessory for all pole workshops

Never seen before clothing on and around a pole with unique half leggings covering only one leg in luminous pink

The beautiful Natalia was delighted to hand over her crown at the Hawth theatre to Kate and gave her well wishes as she revelled in the 800+ crowd cheering at her faultless routine that warranted her world class success

We hope to be seeing more of Natalia in 2014 at Miss Pole Dance Ukraine later on in the year

10 things a professional pole competition judge wants to tell you but can't

1. Please smile as if you are enjoying your performance - If your 'story' or indeed costume ! doesn't warrant a smile then please add one in at the end of your performance  - when you bow and say your 'thank you for watching'
So many performers show their nerves and not their passion for dance and the pole

2. POSTURE & ALIGNMENT This one you will know !!
But please if this is a problem of yours say it over and over again in your head during your performance
'POINT YOUR TOES Extend your limbs'

3. MUSIC - Feel your music from within
It certainly shows if you don't - if in any doubt don't use a song - It's not the right choice if you have doubts - and never let someone else pick your music

4. CLOTHING -  Costumes costumes costumes ! Yes it takes time, effort AND money
An important part of competition preparation
Understand and read the rules then go for maximum effect possible, according to each competition criteria
EVERY point counts these days
Find out about the stage and stage backing too

5. ROUTINE-  Good routines are made up of many different elements
It's not just about tricks tricks tricks
You are better off doing intermediate tricks exceptionally well than advance tricks poorly!

6. FLEXIBILITY & STRETCH  Focus on your flexibility  - This is such an important part of modern pole routines
This means correct preparation warm ups and cool downs not only on the day of the completion but the weeks before and weeks after!
Refer to no. 2

7. EMOTION & EYE CONTACT - Engage with your audience and judges
This is simple and can be done with eye contact, facial expressions and hands reaching towards them, pulling them back into your body and your performance and emotion

8. CONTROL YOUR BREATHING -  Breathe!
An excellent performance not only leaves  the performer breathless but the judges AND audience too
Give all the power and energy you have got

9. ATTENTION TO DETAIL - It's the little details that matter too
Practice and get someone truthful to critique your performance - get them to find 10 things for you to improve on !

10.  TRANSITIONS -    Transitions in, out, around, up, down and from pole to pole
Just as important as your tricks !

Most importantly remember the qualities of an excellent performer are very different to that of an excellent instructor
The skills and mindset are very different

Good luck
Be safe
And remember every challenge is a growth in an upward step

Pole dance vs Sport – Miss Pole Dance UK – World Pole Sport & Fitness – World Pole Dance, established 2004.

I'd like to know whether you have a glamour category and if you could provide a few details on the competition conditions there--Are high heels, other accessories such as hats and feathers, and body painting allowed? - Wall Street Journal USA

With the constant evolution of pole dance for sport and fitness we at Miss Pole Dance UK Organisation creating the world’s first documented rules and regulations, judging standards, chaperone standards, health and safety standards and code of pole practice for performance  - Promoting and setting the guidelines here in the UK  and rapidly being adopted and adapted across the world, depending on specific cultural backgrounds, beliefs and ethics, since the beginning of competitive pole competitions in 2004 we have always given the performer a choice on how they might like to interpret their style, based on their training and background

In the first few years we focused very much on giving the performer a choice
Bare feet or dance heels (shoes)

Boots above the ankle, with or without a heel, have never been permitted in our competitions after year one when we exposed the 'strippers' pole talents, from behind the closed doors of the gentleman's clubs.
Thigh high boots commonly made with patent plastic were banned and have never been permitted as they give a performer an advantage in gripping the steel poles, making tricks difficult to judge fairly, plus also a stereotypical costume of strippers which would be worn in stripping establishments which we were focused on moving away from, exposing these talented individuals into main stream viewing

Up until 2012 we had always had a fitness category and a glamour category
Both categories would perform and dance in the same competition side by side - creating an us and them scenario. Interestingly the glamour style (heels) seemed to win over the fitness style (bare feet) for many years. But is this now changing?
We had created a platform, a safe stage, where they could dance side by side allowing freedom of choice for the performer without the fear of being mis represented or judged

They would be introduced on to stage 'labelled' one or the other category giving them a comfortable choice on how they wish to be presented to their family, friends and onlookers all being educated and enlightened with the talents before them

In 2005 the Miss Pole Dance UK creation - it was all glamour - all performers were either wearing high platform heels or boots over the ankles
In 2006 we removed boots from the competition but still allowed platform heels - the dancer shoe.
In 2008 the categories begun to even out and became 50/50 bare feet / heels, this was also the introduction of pole fitness teacher training and qualifications in the UK too – a huge step in the right direction for professionalising and awarding credibility to our industry
In 2012 all-female performers, accept one were in bare feet
In 2013 we are still allowing heels and bare feet but I think the statistics are showing the performers are deciding they can achieve more intricate moves and better lines in bare feet and still represent powerful glamour, sex appeal and femininity (all promoted within MPD UK)

Tricks and new intricate combinations are evolving on and around the pole too, many that could not be performed in shoes safely
Many gymnastic, incredibly flexible and acro balance moves and shapes are now appearing into the modern circus style pole performances and competitions

Our strict rulings are updated and amended yearly and were created to professionalise and promote pole dance and artistic fitness demonstrations around the vertical beam as an artistic dance, art and fitness form set to music of their choice (avoiding religious and or rude messages within the music).

We currently allow the performers and athletes to still choose their performing footwear and costumes within our strict guidelines, as long as they are safe to perform in.  The experienced and highly trained and prepared judges have the power to stop a performance at any time on the grounds of health and safety and this has happened occasionally throughout the 9 years of our competitions
Our Miss Pole Dance Organisation's main focus, has always been on the health and safety issues of the performers and their pole equipment (fixing poles top and bottom to a sturdy structure) and many costume guidelines and decisions are based on this health and safety attribute.
As for body paint, costumes and props many of these items could be considered dangerous when they come into contact with the pole, and the professional performers do seem to be careful with their choices as many of the tricks cannot be performed in body paint or restrictive clothing and costumes.  That is why we allow costume removal during the performances but not stripping; (alluring the audience in a sexual and suggestive manner!)
We are very much focused on the performance and showmanship of the routine allowing them to tell their story through dance choreography and their artistic interpretation through movement.

This years MPD UK held within a theatre setting on 15th September, we will see incredible performers which will include bodypaint, contortionists, gymnasts, fitness experts, dance experts, costumes, props, heels, bare feet, mixed sex doubles, men and women over 16, the eldest performer being 46
and each year they continually raise the bar with their mesmerising performances and breath taking promotion of what the modern pole dance performance, fitness and endurance around the vertical beam is all about.

Sarah Scott Pole Passion Miss Pole Dance UK interview June 2013

Miss Pole Dance UK champion female singles and doubles - 2012/2013
www.misspoledance-uk.com

Since winning the singles and double titles at Miss Pole Dance UK championships in 2012 in Brighton, how would you say this has changed your life, if at all?
I am doing my absolute dream job; Teaching and travelling, meeting amazing people

How many times a week do you find yourself on the pole now – is this more or less than a year ago?
Around 3-5 days a week, which is similar to last year - but Id say I’m more specific with when and how I train now.
Due to nature of my schedule I try to put aside specific times for my own training so I get the most out of it.

Would you say the title win has helped in your pole fitness career?
I had started teaching a few workshops before MPD but it definitely excelled my career and gave me confidence as a performer. It’s great that a non-professionally trained dancer can go onto such a big stage and win the title. Definitely, life changing.

Are you more recognised worldwide or just nationwide?

Yes I have been very lucky travelling the world teaching XPERT Pole fitness and my signature workshops, I have been to the US, and all over the UK and Europe.

Has it been easy or hard for you to adapt to your new role in the pole industry?
For the first few months it was difficult to adapt as my life changed so much. When I started I always looked up to the winners of the competition such as Alesia Vazmitsel and Sally Ann Giles and since my win I have realised how important it is to be a good role model in the industry, being positive, friendly and encouraging everyone to pole dance no matter who they are.

Where do you see yourself this time next year?
Still busy, I am off to Mexico in October, the USA in January and plans to tour in Australia and South Africa are being worked out. I have just launched my new website which I will be working on with my partner Adam on nutrition and helping people change their food habits. It’s exciting.

Who is your favourite person to train with on the pole and why?
I love training with lots of different people, I am lucky I get to meet and train with many pole dancers across the world.

Last year you had the opportunity to attend the World Pole Dance championships in Zurich what was your favourite moment of the event?
Watching the amazing talent on stage, it was such a friendly atmosphere. It’s amazing how so many different people and countries can meet and share their love of Pole.

What are your future plans for the Pole industry in the near future?
I will be continue to tour around the world teaching my workshops, but also working on nutrition and encouraging people to live a healthier lifestyle. Also to encourage people to get involved in pole for all different reasons. I am an XPERT Master Trainer so we have many teacher training courses coming up, teaching teachers is another one of my passions and helping to grow the pole community by making sure we have safe and effective teachers is one way I can give back.

And finally do you have any training words of wisdom to be the best?
Make sure you don't forget the little things, they can make or break a performance. Take the time to perfect your climbing, inverting, spinning and transitions - not just the tricks. When you perform - look out at the audience. Dance for you - be the best version of you.  Be confident and enjoy being on stage!

Thank you Sarah - We look forward to seeing you at Miss Pole Dance Semi pro day on 29th June at Taylors pole retreat and then again at the professional championships on 15th September at the Hawth theatre where you will be passing on the crown.
We look forward to you  show casing your expert skills on the pole and also will be promoting your workshops those days too.  Hugs

Kay Penney – founder Miss Pole Dance UK www.misspoledance-uk.com

Looking forward to performing too!

Look forward to seeing you - they will be fantastic events!
