Our very own founder of Pole Passion - Kay Penney is excited to be invited as head judge and supporting the young artistic pole fitness enthusiasts of the UK university network with the annual poleforUaNdI pole fitness championships – run by students for students.
Kay will now be judging all categories at Pimlico Academy specialising in the arts and history, centre in London on Saturday 18th February 2012 from mid day. She will be specifically looking at the technical elements of the performers their music interpretations as well as the creative innovation on and around the pole that she is so often passionate about promoting and encouraging.
As one of the industries pioneers since 2001 and creator of Miss Pole Dance UK National championships in 2005 she has pioneered the competitive pole fitness and dance industry since 2003 when she first entered her own pole competition as a competitor at the age of 34. Obviously then the industry being extremely young and nonexistent in many countries she identified that with some professionalisation this could be big – and now 10 years on she is proud to still be actively supporting all competitions and their organisers world wide and loves the challenge of its diversity and cultural challenges it brings with it. Kay has also written a comprehensive judging package and has created the World Pole Sport and Fitness championships in 2009, creating now two world champions Felix Cane age 24 - representing Australia 2009/2011 and Alesia Vazmitsel age 31 from Belarus who is the current world champion 2011/2012.
Alesia Vazmitsel World Champion Budapest 2011
Kay is excited to see, as always, with all the competitions she judges new moves, combinations and creations and possibly the new world champion in the making – what is exciting about the universities is that the new age range is relatively new to the pole fitness and dance industry as they have only become comfortable with the techniques taught recently and believes that since the introduction of accredited pole fitness which is now recognised by the Register Of Exercise of Professionals and endorsed by Skills Active in the UK and Europe has been very instrumental to this change. In 2008 the industry saw the introduction of such qualifications as a professional stand to the sport and the competitions have always been an excellent platform for Kay and her team to educate the sceptical and uniformed. She is hoping that this weekend will change more people’s perception too which she states can only be a positive for the sport and for the people that choose to do the sport of pole fitness world wide.
What is exciting is that the participants are also bringing in new skills into the sport with many dance genres and gymnastic participants entering the completition
For more information about the competition visit the website - http://www.poleforyouandi.co.uk
Congratulations to Amadea Hills, Anna Meekums and Vici Hemming from Kent university

I was recently asked do I ever use Gorilla Gold pole dance grip?
Well yes I do use gorilla gold and it was one of the first grips I found on the market for pole dance and fitness (way back then!!)
As an extremely busy pole business manager my physical pole training these days takes second precedence unfortunately, (I say unfortunately as my love of pole is still as strong as the day I first started over 10 years ago) so I need every bit of help I can get when accomplishing the more difficult inverts.
I include the information about all grips including gorilla gold in our internationally accredited pole fitness qualifications which are now available world wide to educate the fitness and dance world, as each year it becomes more accessible with the use of free standing and portable Rpoles (the lightest and most portable pole in the world)
Gorilla gold's tack is perfect for me for that boost of confidence which lacks when I've been off the pole for a few weeks or more :)
Can you imagine how delighted I felt today when a new licensee text me saying just checking out a new venue for my new classes and guess what the receptionist of the Virgin Active Gym said
'you are gonna need Rpoles in this gym if you want to teach pole fitness'
She was currently having lessons from someone who had already completed our instructor training and already using in her gym in the next town
yeahhhhhhh the professional word is getting round

Pole Passion presents circus skills in hoops, silks, trapeze, corde lisse, acro balance, doubles hoops and trapeze
Pole Passion presents Astra Beck
TASTER SESSIONS IN AERIAL SKILLS
Saturday 17th March 2012 NEW CLASSES
At: Taylors aerial, hoops, silks and 10 pole studio in Capel Dorking RH5 5HF
For those of you who have tried hoops and silks and now want something a little bit different or for those completely new to it all and want to dive straight in (or up down and around!) Astra will be offering a day of alternative aerial skills. This will include a morning session in corde lisse and trapeze and an afternoon session in doubles. The doubles session will start with acro balance on the floor and then move to doubles hoop.
Corde lisse (rope) is very similar to silks and uses many of the same moves, only it will feel completely different as obviously it is a different piece of equipment.
Trapeze is very similar to hoop, and uses many of the same moves, however there is a whole lot more to experiment with using the ropes of the trapeze.
Time: 11.00am - 1.00pm £50 per single person
Limited spaces to 3 per piece of equipment
Acro balance is the art of two people using each other’s weight to balance and lift each other from the floor. It combines elements of adagio, acrobatics, and hand balancing. A lot of care, coordination and mutual trust is needed in order to do this skill as you will be basing and flying each other - in this session we will start with some trust building exercises and then work on some basic moves.
Doubles hoop is the same as hoop only much more fun as you get to play with a partner at the same time! We will cover some of the basic symmetrical moves as well as moves where you base and fly each other in the air.
Time: 2.00pm - 4.00pm £50 per couple (£25 each)
No limit of places for acro balance / limited spaces of two couples per hoop
If both classes are booked the same day the cost is £90
For the doubles you will need to come with a partner who you are able to work with effectively, ie either (1.) be of similar weight, height and build so you can base and fly with each other; or (2) have one person bigger and stronger who will base with another who is smaller and lighter to fly.
Sunday 18th March 2012
At: Taylors aerial hoops, silks and 10 pole studio in Capel Dorking
Time: 11.00am 1:00pm £40 hoops only
2 hours of single hoops
Time: 14:00 – 16:00pm £40 silks only
2 hours of single silks
If both classes are booked on the same day then the cost is £65 per person

Why Qualify in Pole Fitness??
Below is an email conversation from one of my newest members to the Pole Passion instructor team
Karen was spotted over a year ago by one of the directors of Pole Passion for her enthusiasm and dedication to the pole world
Karen has now just successfully completed her Accredited Level 3 Instructor Training course
Karen recently wrote to me and said
‘When I did the first aid certificate last year there was alot of negativity from some of the girls about Pole Passions instructor training. They were saying how wrong it was that you could do your level 1 & then be qualified to go away & teach inverts. I did try to explain that you progress through the levels to work up to that on level 3 but they really didn’t seem to take it on board.
I think it may be an idea to emphasize a little more on the level 1 what the content is of the next 2 levels, maybe quote some comments from people who took the level 3. Maybe you could have a display poster like the one you have for the burlesque instructor training (can’t remember what they're called!)
Level 3 yesterday’s full day instructor training was really hard and challenging, i'm so not ready to teach at that level yet but I thoroughly enjoyed it. People really need to be pushed to go on to the level 3!
Thanks again!
Happy Monday 2 u!
Hi Karen thanks for the email
I must admit I really enjoyed devising the course and yes it’s designed to be hard !!
Level 1 gives you the basics, foundations and fundamentals of pole fitness and does not give you automatic right to teach inverts! there are no inverts in it!! therefore we are not endorsing the teaching of inverts in level 1 - so that information is incorrect they were quoted to say
We all have to start somewhere and many are negative because they don’t like to follow a system that has been approved (I was one of those people) so I fully understand where they are coming from
what level 1 does give you is a recognised qualification and accreditation that you have reached the required standard to teach pole fitness safely, effectively and progressively - telling the world you have worked hard for your accreditation !!
what we have worked hard for in Pole Passion is to devise a documented structure whereby insurance companies are beginning to recognise our skill and award our efforts with insuring us against accidental injuries at a level we are qualified to teach
I always look at it as - what would the judge say and ask if there was a fatal accident in one of our lessons! (God forbid)
I’ve worked long and hard for over 10 years to offer the best training the industry has to make excellent instructors
We can not make instructors join our courses (there is always a freedom of choice) however we have made opportunities for those who would like to join us and these are now available to all, which again if they choose not to progress with courses awarded and supported by accreditation's then that is up to them. - how would the judge see it?
There are many people in many industries that are not properly qualified and let’s not forget how young pole fitness still is. There is no law required to be accredited to teach pole fitness however as a professional company we offer these accreditation's to be the best and most professional which I believe we have gained, not only national but international recognition - there are many amazing and talented pole instructors out there as there are many unqualified doctors and driving instructors and electricians, however can they get adequate insurance when needed?
For me when I started pole dancing and pole fitness, there were no recognitions or qualifications and people didn’t take me or our industry seriously - now we have and yes we are gaining the recognition we all so deserve.
What’s great also is that all our courses are recognised by some insurance companies too whereby years ago no one would insure us or if they did it was £1000's !!
Karen replied
I wish I could remember the relevant people & forward your e mail, so true!!
Kay replied
Don’t worry Karen I will copy and paste my words and blog it :)
We can’t change everyone’s minds all of the time in an instant but over the years you will see how it will transform - thank you for being one of my dedicated and professional Pole Passion team members :)
