Kay Penney Pole Competition experience 2001 - 2012

Kay Penney - One of the first pole dance for fitness instructors in the UK and world, who started practicing pole dance techniques in 2001 soon after the birth of her third child as a new fun way to remain in shape mentally and physically, innovating and pioneering the UK pole industry.
As a dance, health and beauty  expert and fitness professional, for now over 25 years, from the very early age, Kay Penney has made Pole now her sole dance and fitness passion.  she is co-inventor of the RPole, the first ever free standing, light weight, portable pole designed specifically for the gym environment and pole fitness  programmes and accredited instructor training she developed in 2008, awarding students the highest awards in the industry from foundational courses to Master trainer status.

Kay has spent the last 10 years continually creating, networking internationally, supporting and promoting all pole athletes across the world working with different cultures and ethics, with her simple mission and message in mind – that to allow all to showcase their art of pole dance and passion on a world stage without the fear of being wrongly judged.
She created her own pole business in 2003 'Pole Passion Ltd', which is known across the globe and went on to create the largest and most respected pole competition in the UK, Miss Pole Dance UK, following on adding all categories, amateur and semi pro divisions, including the first Male championships, Mr Pole Fitness UK in 2009, culminating in the creation of World Pole Sport & Fitness Championships – World Pole Dance in 2009 in Jamaica.

She continues to have a daily and very active role in her business’ supporting women and men in this chosen genre, and is proud to have her burlesque instructor training certifications accredited in the UK for fitness too.

She is co designer of the portable RPole created with a desire to have a sexy yet functional piece of fitness equipment in the gyms across the world.

What is Pole Fitness

What is Pole fitness?
Amazing emotions and positive feeling can be expressed and experienced through the power of music, dance, movement and fitness techniques.  Motion creates emotion
Many of you may have experienced other forms of exercise and fitness but pole is different – we encourage group support and to be non judgemental as you are gently introduced and eased into a new world of fitness techniques and to new movements.  By using different muscle groups, many that are not used in conventional types of exercise, you will be amazed at how quickly you can increase your upper body tone and strength, creating additional power which leads to an increase in body awareness to boost of your self esteem and confidence massively

POLE Fitness is FUN and allows and encourages you to be positively fit, self expressive, powerfully confident, playful and always very individual. We support and enhance who you already are. We use the pole as our dance partner; that solid support, one that we go on to use in other areas of our lives, certainly a dance partner that is always there when you’re ready to dance and one that never treads on your toes!!

As with all other forms of exercise pole fitness and dance routines incorporates all the 9 components and elements of fitness
Power, Strength, Agility, Speed, coordination, balance, flexibility, muscle, strength and cardiovascular endurance
Incorporating and encouraging great posture and flexibility
Power - the ability to exert maximum muscular contraction instantly in an explosive burst of movements often used during a pole spin during takeoff. The two components of power are strength and speed. (e.g. Gemini)

Strength - the extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance (e.g. holding a static pole pose - )

Agility & Speed - the ability to perform a series of explosive power movements in rapid succession in opposing directions (e.g. your pole routines and dance choreography or smaller pole move combinations)

Coordination- the ability to integrate all the elements so that effective movements are achieved with ease and without causing injury with wrong or incorrect body posture.

Balance - the ability to control the body's position, either stationary (e.g. beginner move  Pole Pose hooking one leg on the pole or advanced move a handspring) or while moving (e.g. a spinning chair move or cartwheel legs)

Flexibility - the ability to achieve an extended range of motion without being impeded by excess skin tissue, i.e. fat or muscle (e.g. executing a leg split)

Local Muscle Endurance - a single muscle's ability to perform sustained work (e.g. inverts by using the arm and back muscles)

Cardiovascular Endurance - the heart's ability to deliver blood to working muscles and their ability to use it (e.g. pole dance and fitness routines on and around the pole)

Strength Endurance - a muscle's ability to perform a maximum contraction time after time (e.g. conditioning moves on and around the pole and routines)

More gymnasts are finding Pole Dance & Fitness techniques an excellent way to progress into other challenging fields.

‘My Name is Ally Barugh and I have been pole dancing now for 3 weeks (3 x 1 hour lessons) with Pole Passion in Burgess Hill. www.polepassion.com

By the time of the competition I would have only  had 4 lessons so I am quite nervous.
I have lived in Ibiza for the past 7 years and worked as an acrobat there and this is where I first saw pole dancing performed as an art about a year ago, which I loved and was amazed by so I have wanted to learn from then on.

I returned to England to have a baby, so I have a baby boy who is now 6 weeks old, after having my baby I thought the perfect way to get back into shape and learn something which I’ve wanted to do for a while now was to start pole fitness classes.
I live in West Sussex and have a 3 year old daughter as well as my new baby boy. For work I am a Sports Injury Therapist and an acrobat. I was a gymnast for many years, and competed to a high level, I retired from gymnastics in 2007 but have found my gymnastics background has helped me when learning the different pole skills. I absolutely love Pole Dancing and am so glad I’ve found something that keeps me fit which I can still use my skills and challenge myself. ‘
