Introduction to the world of pole fitness and entrepreneurship - by Pole Passion UK

Unveiling the Empowering Journey of Female Entrepreneurs in Pole Fitness: Eye-opening Insights from 2006 Research conducted by Kay Penney of Pole Passion Ltd

Female entrepreneurs have always been a source of inspiration for many, breaking stereotypes and shattering glass ceilings in various industries. However, in a male-dominated field like fitness, women entrepreneurs have faced even greater challenges. This is where pole fitness comes in.
In 2006, a groundbreaking research study shed light on the empowering journey of female entrepreneurs in the pole fitness industry. The study explored the motivations, challenges, and successes of these women, providing a comprehensive view of their experiences. In this blog post, we will delve into the insights from the 2006 research study, revealing the inspiring stories of female entrepreneurs in pole fitness, and the lessons we can learn from them. Get ready to be empowered by these women who have defied the odds and made a significant impact in the world of fitness.

In recent years, pole fitness has gained immense popularity as a unique and empowering form of exercise. What was once perceived as solely a seductive dance form has transformed into a powerful outlet for personal growth, self-expression, and physical strength. However, what many may not realise is the significant entrepreneurial journey that numerous female entrepreneurs embark upon within the pole fitness industry.

In the research, we gain valuable knowledge about the challenges faced, the triumphs achieved, and the strategies employed by these remarkable women to carve a niche for themselves in a highly competitive market.

At Pole Passion fitness, we revolutionised the pole industry, at a time in 2006, there was not such a thing as pole fitness!!
Kay Penney who was not only passionate about her craft but also driven by the desire to create a safe and inclusive space where individuals of all backgrounds and ages, can explore and embrace their strengths in a new form of movement.
'We wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of pole fitness, both physically and mentally, and are dedicated to sharing this empowering experience with others all over the world.'

From the inception of Pole Passion and the other few businesses at that time, to the now, daily operations and challenges faced, these female entrepreneurs exhibit a remarkable blend of determination, creativity, and resilience. They constantly navigate through the complexities of building a brand, marketing their services, and fostering a supportive community while challenging societal stereotypes and misconceptions associated with pole fitness.
By uncovering the insights gained from Pole Passion's  2006 research, we hope to inspire and empower individuals to pursue their passions, break barriers, and create their own successful ventures within the dynamic realm of pole fitness.

Top Tips for Competing in Pole Dance Competitions - MPD UK

TOP Tips for Competing

If you are struggling badly with nerves before a competition or have no where to start
planning a routine, then reading the below may help as planning and preparation is key.
This may take 6 weeks for some competitors or 4 years for others. Remember it's your journey
Everyone is different

So many times we hear, 'Oh I have no idea what to wear, or I'm not sure what music should
I use ... two days before a competition !!

Top Tips to REMEMBER...

1. SMILE as if you are enjoying your performance - if your 'story' or indeed costume ! doesn't
warrant a smile then please add one in at the end of your performance  - when you bow and
say your 'thank you's for watching'
So many performers  and competitors show their nerves, and not their passion for dance and
the pole - The judges and audience need to be wowed within the first 15 seconds of
your performance

2. POSTURE & ALIGNMENT This one you will know !!
But please if this is a problem of yours say it over and over again in your head during
your performance
'POINT YOUR TOES Extend your limbs' including concentrate on your fingers too!!

3. MUSIC - Feel your music from within
It certainly shows if you don't - if in any doubt don't use it. It's not the right choice of music if you
have doubts - and never let someone else pick your music (it's ok that they help and
advise, but ultimately it's your choice)

4. CLOTHING -  Costumes costumes costumes ! Yes it takes time, effort AND money
An important part of competition preparation
Understand and read the rules then go for maximum effect possible according to
each competition criteria
EVERY point counts these days
Find out about the stage and stage backing
MPD UK is all about the performance and costumes too - GO WILD!! AND TELL
YOUR STORY!!

5. ROUTINE-  Good routines are made up of many different elements
It's not just about tricks tricks tricks
You are better off doing intermediate tricks exceptionally well, than advance tricks poorly!

6. FLEXIBILITY & STRETCH  Focus on your flexibility  - This is such an important part
of modern pole routines
This means correct preparation warm ups and cool downs, not only on the day of the completion
but the weeks before and weeks after!
Refer to no. 2
You should be allowing at least 30 minutes preparation stretch before it's your turn on
the poles (many of the champions will be warming and stretching for 2 hours prior!!)

7. EMOTION & EYE CONTACT - Engage with your audience and judges
This is simple and can be done with eye contact, facial expressions and hands reaching
towards them pulling them back into your body and your performance and emotion

8. CONTROL YOUR BREATHING -  Breathe!
An excellent performance not only leaves  the performer breathless but the judges AND
 audience too
Give all the power and energy you have got

9. ATTENTION TO DETAIL - It's the little details that matter too
Practice and get someone truthful to critique your performance - get them to find
10 things for you to improve on !

10.  TRANSITIONS -    Transitions in, out, around, up, down and from pole to pole
Just as important as your tricks !

11. MINDSET - Have fun and look at it as a performance not a competition
Most importantly remember the qualities of an excellent performer are very different
to that of an excellent instructor or student
The skills and mindset are very different, MEDITATION AND VISUALISATION ARE
EXCELLENT preparation skills for a champion :)

12. MOST IMPORTANTLY- Check the rules and regulations and if in doubt speak
with the organisers and ask lots of questions

Enjoy yourself, Meet new people, Be safe, Train Safe...remember  every challenge is a
growth step forward.

Thank you for joining us at Miss Pole Dance UK Amateur & Semi Pro Championships

Good Luck

Pole Pioneer, Kay Penney UK interviewed by Alma Pirner - Hungary - July 2015

How and when did you start Pole Passion as a business?

I started to lay the foundations of Pole Passion in 2001 in the UK, there were only a handful of people exploring pole dance and pole fitness.  It was soon after my third child was born. I started pole dancing as a hobby wanting to get fit again after the birth of my son, I was in search of something more exciting than the gym and more challenging than my normal routines of fitness. Pole Parties became popular in 2003 As my popularity grew so came Pole Fitness in 2006 Pole Fitness Instructor training was developed in 2008.  Miss Pole Dance was created in 2005 and World Pole Sport & Fitness - World Pole Dance in 2009

What was the biggest challenge?

Changing public perception. I identified quite quickly with the right marketing, education and professionalism, pole fitness could be accepted by the masses by staying focused with so many ideas buzzing around – It was hard to keep focused and following through with one idea before moving on to the next. This new exercise and dance was addictive, challenging, exciting and for me pioneering it in the UK was so much fun

What do you feel the biggest success in this business?

Love and connection from so many people now around the world all sharing the same ideas and love, passion and enthused with the passion around the pole – I have made the biggest family I could ever wish for and providing a worlds stage was my biggest ambition – a platform where the performer would not be judged wrongly, where they would receive the credibility and recognition they deserve in a professional environment

Why it's so popular all around the World, what do you think?

Because pole, no matter how it is portrayed, fulfils so many desires and connects people in such a positive way
The love of challenge, variety and contribution
Growth and significance all positive human needs

Tell me the story of Pole Passion and World Pole dance?

It slowly happened over time encourage by my husband Steve as he saw my potential as a leader of like minded people
I was passionate to make a difference to peoples lives, I wasnt sure how i was going to do this but Steve saw my strength and leadership more than I ever did.
Pole Passion grew from a personal hobby encouraged by my close friends, from close friends, who told their friends, who told their friends I soon became well known. I got so busy I had to take on instructors to help with the demand for my lessons. I then became quite ill (cancer in fact) for me this was the turning point, not actually knowing if I would be alive in 6 months I decided to document all my teachings.

I started to name my moves and document my lesson plans. 18 months later I became well always striving for that next move, whilst actually being incredibly poorly – pole kept me alive and focused me in a positive manner
In 2005 I had created a national championships, Miss Pole Dance UK, for me this was about educating the masses and the champions were urging me to create the next level for them after a few years waiting, I decided to create the first World championships, not actually knowing who in the world would attend !!  or even if I had the time to plan it  - It was all a gamble but it paid off, the market was bigger than I really believed at the time

What does pole dancing mean in your life?

It has become my life
It's what I wake up for
It's what I fall asleep thinking about every night
The people I connect with and the places I visit all have a connection to the pole
I now can’t see a life without the pole

Who’s are the greatest and most prominent pole dancers in the World who did most for this business's popularity?

There are so many and each person who I have met along the way has each contributed to the growth of the industry in their own special way
From Sheila Kelly to Fawnia Dietritch, my two training  inspirations in early 2000 to the pioneers in each country I have the privilege in teaching and sharing knowledge with
Pantera USA 2006,
Alma Pirner Budapest 2008,
Anastaisia  Russia, 2009
Keem Martinez  2009 Mr Pole Fitness, France ,
Elena Shishkova Russia 2009,
Jeneyne Butterfly USA 2009,
Felix Cane Australia 2009,
Alesica Vazmitsel UK/ Belarus 2009, to more recent individuals of Nadia from Romania
All the contestant of the first world championships for sport and fitness dance and art to the present day competitors who are the continuing future of our industry

What's the difference between pole dance and pole fitness/pole sport?

For me there are very clear differences
In Pole Passion we all start with the pole fitness – this is a relatively new sport, and exercise programme, only being created in the UK in 2006 – as a series of moves, tricks, spins, poses and transitions, a workout on and around the pole, incorporating floor work, stretch, flexibility, core work outs, conditioning moves for fun and fitness – In Pole Passion we have also  created a grading system whereby students and instructors can reach certain levels of expertise by the way of an assessment process

Pole Dance – is a series of set choreography moves, set to music to create a pole show enabling the performer to express themselves through movements on and around the pole, being free to tell their story

And finally comes the Pole Sport – a series of gymnastic, and athletic moves and set sequences including routines and combinations with a more ridged formulae to technique

What do you think pole dancing is so seductive for men?
I believe pole dancing is seductive for both men and women who appreciate the beautiful form of a woman’s and man’s body, demonstrating the athleticism and wonders of the human body can achieve, defying gravity creating shapes in such a mesmerising and super human way. For me pole dancing incorporates strength inside and out as it is much harder to achieve than it looks
my motto being empowerment confidence fitness & FUN!

How do you see pole dancing in the future?

I see the pole dancing spreading everywhere, from gym to gym to park to beach from village hall to the front room – pole dancing is an activity that has no boundaries or prejudices, discriminations to age, gender or physical ability
I have witnessed the blind and deaf, the young the old, the disabled and the ill move beautifully and creatively around the pole – for me there are no boundaries for the pole –– we have taken it to the highest mountain in the UK, we have taken the pole in the sea, we have taken it to beaches parks and roads -  let’s not stifle the creativity and possibilities of pole

Do you think it's just a fashion, or it will last longer?

For me a fashion is something that only has a season or two – Pole has been around for me for 15 years therefore no this is not a fashion I believe we are still learning and developing the industry and there is so much more to come

Tell me more about the UK pole dancers, and people's opinion about?

Over the years the barriers are changing, initially 30 year old women, age bracket was only interested in pole then suddenly 5 years later the 20 years were interested, now all ages, young and old, men and women are interested. The media has helped, the facebook community has helped to educate the naïve – people opinions are changing for the positive and will continue to do so. The level of professionalism has increased and education has progressed and I believe we still have exciting times ahead

Miss Pole Dance UK amateurs and semi professional championships 2015

The new and bigger venue was still too small!!  with increasing numbers descending on sleepy Felbridge Village Hall on June 28th, for the all day event of competitions, Pole Passion is set to expand further for 2016.

The 5 competitions supported and promoted 48 competitors and the national Mr Pole Fitness UK 2014/5 champion Dave Skda.
New champions were crowned and new records were set - even the new Pole Beat champion pole dance battle was yet again won by a woman - Rose-a-Lisa

Kay Penney, Pole pioneer and her dedicated team of students, and instructors worked incredibly hard to keep the day running smoothly. for me Miss Pole Dance is about educating the public, an opportunity for people to see pole fitness for the first time maybe, in a professional and organised competition structure.

The two chosen charities this year were selected by tow of Pole Passion  instructors and were
Chailey Heritage Foundation  and The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation - both receiving cash from the donated raffle prizes

 October 2014

Pole Passion, Crawley Pole Fitness Company, hosted the Largest National Pole dance championships on 4th October 2014 at the Hawth Theatre of arts; the venue chosen for not only its local appeal but for it creative   and dynamic approach to modern shows and multicultural mix.

Over 30 men and women competitors, in the three categories and 9 professional international pole fitness and dance judges, with 8 show act performances and over 600 spectators and over 100 helpers and support team back stage, all descended on Crawley, West Sussex on Saturday from around the country to host what is now become the most prestigious and longest running pole dance event in the history of competitive pole dance competitions.

Joining the contestants, many respected and previous attending professionals chosen from the best of the best in the UK and this year we are delighted to have the World Champion Bendy Kate and Britain’s Got Talent 2014 ambassador, Emma Haslam O’Toole, and Got to Dance representative Daniel Rosen, represented the professional judging panel.

Each contestant for the finals, from the three categories Men's (10 competitors), synchronised doubles (6 pairs) and females (12 competitors) had to compete a demanding series of pole tricks, spins, poses transitions between 4-5minutes on two stainless steel RPoles, one static and one spinning, both creating different dynamics and techniques on and around the pole.

The areas of judging, from the five judges in each category, that were taken into consideration for each contestant, consisted of maximum 10 marks in their presentation of their routine, including costumes and props enhancing their performance element and storytelling; many contestants making their own.

The dance and fitness performance section consisted of 10 marks per judge which included their variety of choreography, music interpretation control and demonstration of strength and power, elegance and grace, throughout their gruelling routine also including the use of both poles, creating height and depth to their dance and acrobatic performances.

And thirdly, the tricks section, awarding 15 marks per judge, demonstrating the tricks and combination of tricks including fluidity and effortless looking transitions to their performance including, but not limited to, floor work, acro balance and circus skills

The performances displayed a huge range of emotions and storytelling with masses of heart, soul and passion expressed in these amazing aerial performances, that this growing community is displaying

The organisation is honoured that all these competitors came to compete from across the country and each year the competition just gets fiercer and we are excited to see double the amount of men competing this year from 2013

Congratulations go to Dawid Skowronek (Sk Da) on becoming the new Mr Pole Fitness UK 2014, a well deserved win and to Sam Willis for an incredible performance and 2nd place and in 3rd place Michael Donohoe

Congratulations go to the Doubles winners, the Walker sisters Kristina and Heather who also took the Best Tricks award, with an incredible close second by, Doctor of Psychology, Kat Bailey and her pole student Danielle Haynes, coming joint winners but taking second place as Heather and Kristina just skimming past them by 1.5 points in their tricks category

Our congratulations also go to Yvette Dusol on being the new proud owner of the Miss Pole Dance UK Crown, where we are sure her glory will now continue to flourish beyond her imagination

Yvette already a professional performer with a circus based background, will now be invited to represent the UK in the World Pole Dance - World Pole Sport & fitness championships in China.

Yvette Dusol has been a professional performer since a very young age and travels the world performing aerial hoop, silks and contortion. She started pole dancing only 2 years ago and it is now her passion in life, and any spare time she gets is spent on a pole. Her ultimate goal is to one day become a World Champion pole dancer.

More information is expected to be released regarding the forth coming World championships on- April 11th & 12th  in Beijing, where Pole Passion will be the hosts once more on a global scale, inviting the first and second placed finalist of Miss Pole Dance UK to represent the UK

Mr Yung Biao of China Pole Dance who will be co-hosting the event, has been studying English to prove better communications between Pole Passion and the head of World Pole Dance and originator Kay Penney, to make this a reality in 2015.
