Where:  Hawth Theatre in CRAWLEY, boasting its support for the arts

WHEN: Saturday 10^th October 2015

A breath taking and mesmerising celebration of men and women, elite pole sport artists and performers travelling from all of the UK. A show held over seven hours with over 30 competitors in three categories
7 Males, 5 mixed Doubles & 13 females and 10 World Class Champions and performers, who will be judged on creativity, costumes, pole technique and death defying tricks, elegance and showmanship including the artistic side of pole dance, jaw dropping performances, where it seems gravity knows no boundaries, this really is pole sport, dance and fitness at its very best!!

Miss Pole Dance UK professional Championships started back in 2005 in Brighton’s Honey club, with a view to educating the masses, giving the credibility to the dancers that they deserved

The competition and indeed the entire pole dance and fitness community has expanded over the years, exponentially, now having outgrown the Honey Club, the competition had to find a new home and has been  currently hosted annually at the Arts Hawth theatre, Crawley, West Sussex for the last three years

1.The Miss Pole Dance UK Pro and Mr Pole Fitness UK competition will take place next month. How is the event shaping up? What can we expect?  (Anything new/different?)

All is going to plan and working as hard as ever to create the most spectacular pole show for the performing arts in the country WE have  3 competitions at a 800 capacity Theatre this year Mr Pole Fitness UK Miss Pole Dance UK Doubles category and Miss Pole Dance UK singles championships

The vibrant energy will resonate through the theatre this year and we are so excited to be showcasing the talented performers so worthy of this prestigious stage

2.Tell us about the categories and competitors. (You can list them here)

 Mr Pole Fitness UK- open to all males over 18 years of age

Miss Pole Dance UK Doubles - this can be mixed or same sex gender

MPDUK  - Female singles again all talented individuals who have had to work exceptionally hard for a place this year showing originality, passion, story line and exceptional skill 

3.As well as all the amazing competitors you also have a panel judges. Tell us about your judges and how the competitors will be marked.

6 Judges have been chosen this year - The MPD UK Judges are chosen for their commitment, personalities and passion to the pole industry . Each bringing their unique style and technique to the judging panel.  Bendy Kate  Sarah Scott and Justine McLucas all finalists and winners encompassing the Miss Pole Dance ethos of passionate and skilful performances our international judges are experienced; Akos, a fitness and pole dance professional from Hungary and Alma originator of Pole Fitness with Akos in Hungary and co hosts with Pole Passion of World Pole Sport & fitness championships 2011.   Lena Shishkova, Pole Passion Master Trainer and originator of pole fitness in Russia bringing a unique blend of skills and technical expertise to the judging panel this year also

The competitors are marked through three criteria categories which are then further broken down into

Dance and fitness show presentation

Deductions are made for slips and trips, incorrect extensions and incorrect lines, aborted moves moving off the beat and bad music interpretation to name a few of deductions

4.How is your event different and what do you hope to contribute to the pole dance community with the event? (why is it different/special etc)

As pole dance is still evolving its important to our organisation to keep pushing boundaries - As we did, first introduce Pole Dance to the general public, in 2005  our message is still as strong and powerful as it was then as it is today. We focus on  providing a professional and exciting stage for musical theatre, creativity and innovation to further develop and encourage the art of pole dance for fitness and fun. With the increase of pole fitness and dancing sweeping the nation interpreted is so many ways, its still very much a platform that people can work towards. As we know some pole fitness classes do not cater for the dance side of pole and very much different skills and techniques are required and not touched upon  Our competitors are about creativity and performance and allowing them to show who they are through movement around the pole

5.How has the standard of entrants changed/improved since you first started the competition?

We are still seeing gorgeous and creative performances - competitors still manage to introduce creative props and by incorporating  the foundation moves with new moves and combinations,   Certainly with the costumes. Last year we even saw full length cloaks - to pole in!

6.What is it about pole dancing that you enjoy the most? 

The fun and friendships, the contribution creating personal growth and development both physically and mentally  I have managed over the last 13 years to continue to fulfil all my ambitions and find more to challenge myself with. 

7. Has pole dancing had an impact on anything else in your life such as giving your more confidence or making new friends?

Absolutely - New Development in assessor training

Public speaking

Leadership Nationally & Internationally

Supporting and Mentoring working along side different cultures, ethnics and Religions.

8. Where would you like to see pole dancing in the future?

Still the same visions as i had when i first began. I want to see pole dancing available to all and certainly with the development of free standing Rpoles we will have and will continue to make this happen.

9.Are their any unsung heroes of the pole dancing industry that you think should be given credit for their contribution.

This is difficult to answer as there is so many in the industry just here in the UK alone who contribute their time/energy, either locally or Nationally. Many contribute (an important human need), not necessarily for acknowledgement  but because they care for people and health.

10.Three words that mean pole dancing to you. E.g strong, sexy. confident

Since winning the singles and double titles at Miss Pole Dance UK championships in 2012 in Brighton, how would you say this has changed your life, if at all?
I am doing my absolute dream job; Teaching and travelling, meeting amazing people

How many times a week do you find yourself on the pole now – is this more or less than a year ago?
Around 3-5 days a week, which is similar to last year - but Id say I’m more specific with when and how I train now.
Due to nature of my schedule I try to put aside specific times for my own training so I get the most out of it.

Would you say the title win has helped in your pole fitness career?
I had started teaching a few workshops before MPD but it definitely excelled my career and gave me confidence as a performer. It’s great that a non-professionally trained dancer can go onto such a big stage and win the title. Definitely, life changing.

Are you more recognised worldwide or just nationwide?


Yes I have been very lucky travelling the world teaching XPERT Pole fitness and my signature workshops, I have been to the US, and all over the UK and Europe.

Has it been easy or hard for you to adapt to your new role in the pole industry?
For the first few months it was difficult to adapt as my life changed so much. When I started I always looked up to the winners of the competition such as Alesia Vazmitsel and Sally Ann Giles and since my win I have realised how important it is to be a good role model in the industry, being positive, friendly and encouraging everyone to pole dance no matter who they are.

Where do you see yourself this time next year?
Still busy, I am off to Mexico in October, the USA in January and plans to tour in Australia and South Africa are being worked out. I have just launched my new website which I will be working on with my partner Adam on nutrition and helping people change their food habits. It’s exciting.

Who is your favourite person to train with on the pole and why?
I love training with lots of different people, I am lucky I get to meet and train with many pole dancers across the world.

Last year you had the opportunity to attend the World Pole Dance championships in Zurich what was your favourite moment of the event?
Watching the amazing talent on stage, it was such a friendly atmosphere. It’s amazing how so many different people and countries can meet and share their love of Pole.

What are your future plans for the Pole industry in the near future?
I will be continue to tour around the world teaching my workshops, but also working on nutrition and encouraging people to live a healthier lifestyle. Also to encourage people to get involved in pole for all different reasons. I am an XPERT Master Trainer so we have many teacher training courses coming up, teaching teachers is another one of my passions and helping to grow the pole community by making sure we have safe and effective teachers is one way I can give back.

And finally do you have any training words of wisdom to be the best?
Make sure you don't forget the little things, they can make or break a performance. Take the time to perfect your climbing, inverting, spinning and transitions - not just the tricks. When you perform - look out at the audience. Dance for you - be the best version of you.  Be confident and enjoy being on stage!

 The first lady in history to hold both titles in one year at the Miss Pole Dance UK professional championships, held this last Saturday 2^nd June 2012

Bendy Kate who was Sarah's doubles winning  partner came 4th in the singles category although her moves were breathe taking and innovative as she brought her circus moves to the pole too

We first saw Sarah take the spectacular win at the doubles competition at the National Synchronised Pole competition in 2009 with her strength and beauty then, has just got stronger and stronger.

Sarah Scott, Bendy Kate and Nico Modestine, The 8^th Miss Pole Dance UK Fitness and Dance championships was held on the 2^nd June in Brighton where three amazing championships showcased their skill and athleticism of the most talented pole dance performers in the UK

Nico Modestine only 6 months into pole took the Mr Pole Fitness UK title

At 3pm the males lead the day with  the  Mr Pole Fitness UK Championship following on from that at 4pm followed Miss Pole Dance UK doubles category to culminate in the  finale of Miss Pole Dance UK professional category female singles category.  These competitions were not possible without the amazing contribution of the international judges this year who supported the UK competitors

Headed by founder Kay Penney, all three competitions were over looked by Kay herself. Kay still as passionate to select professional and friendly ambassadors to represent what she has worked so hard for over the last 10 years, representing pole artistry, educating and promoting the talented and ambitious to fly the flag of this still relatively new form of dance and fitness - over the years Kay is excited to see the stigma decrease year by year - as her message was simple back in 2005 - providing a stage where the performers could showcase their art and passion without the fear of being wrongly judged - and with the increase of national support with the winners of this prestigious national championship focusing on this gallant task - for all the competitors it not just about the 5 minutes they get to perform it becomes their life, their dedicated religion and art.

International judge Alma Pirner, who has become a very dear friend who supports us in the UK and internationally too.Alma is the organiser of the Hungarian Miss Pole Dance National championships since 2005 who is also the owner  and creator of the first Pole fitness company in Hungary, performer and instructor at dollhouse aerial studio in Budapest,  next on the judging panel was Akos, partner of Alma who is an accomplished teacher in fitness and pole fitness and is the envy of many a male pole fitness instructor, he has a very active role and supports dollhouse and the national pole dance championships in Budapest and was co host with Alma last year at the World Pole Dance  - World Pole Sport & Fitness Championships last October in Budapest

Luxe is the consecutive Asia Pacific  - Classic Pole Dance Champion 2010 and 2011 and has performed internationally on stage with some of the world’s best  including world pole dance finalist Jenyne Buttefly, Natasha Wang, Duncan West and Chelle Hafner

This incredible lady at such a young age took the Miss Pole Dance UK professional winning title last year having waited patiently for almost 3 years as it was her ambition to enter this national championships at 18 years old – she is an inspiration and ambassador for the UK and pole fitness and dance in general who has an amazing company JLN, with wonderful staff and support from her students

Sarah Scott - Miss Pole Dance UK 2012 champion

Sarah Scott is now the new and proud owner of the Miss Pole Dance crown – on June 2nd following in the footsteps of  Elena Gibson, Tracey Simmonds, Sally Anne Giles, Maxine Betts and Jess Leanne Norris. Battling it out amongst the 12 finalists, 26 year old Sarah was crowned the winner of Miss Pole Dance UK professional category in Brighton’s live music and events venue, concorde2,  on Saturday evening.  Many new and old artists have performed on the stage, narrowly leaving behind her fellow contestants; Felicity Logan, 2nd place, Kristina Walker 3rd place and her doubles partner Bendy Kate (Kate Czepulkowski ) 4^th place.

With her classic and flawless performance Sarah graced the hundred strong audiences with her relaxed, focused and professional manner, prepared and determined to showcase her art to the pole community never imagining she would take the crown. Her music choice complimented her choreography; Right here, Right now - Fat Boy Slim - Zeppy Zep remix.

Sarah quoted on facebook -  ‘A BIG thank you to Kay Penney , Steve Penney and Pole Passion for the Miss Pole Dance UK Championships 2012 - I went only to showcase what I do and never could have imagined I'd come out as the winner - It has been a very surreal weekend and I can't wait for the next year - A big thank you to all the judges, Jess Leanne Norris, the former Miss Pole Dance UK champion, Alma Pirner, Hungarian Miss Pole Fitness championship creator and owner of Dollhouse & aerial studio and Kay Penney also head judge and creator of the competition.’ Sarah also thanked all the other competitors and went on to say. ‘The atmosphere backstage was so friendly and supportive - and after seeing the videos I have been in awe of the strength, grace and diversity that this competition has brought to the pole community. Mr Pole Fitness UK was such a great show also and I think we can all agree that the standard of the men’s division is going from strength to strength - imagine what it’s going to be like next year!! ‘  Mr Pole Fitness UK is now in its 4^th year and quite rightly Sarah states this is by far the best year of contestants that have powered themselves to showcase alongside the females, who are leading the pole fitness and dance industry.

Of course we share Sarah’s views  - Miss Pole Dance UK and Mr Pole Fitness UK is all about education allowing the contestants to have a stage where they can be free and express their unique skills and art without the fear of being wrongly judged.  This has been the aim since 2005 when Kay first created Miss Pole Dance UK and the contestants and our job as judges is to choose professional and talented ambassadors for our sport we all love so much – We are proud to promote and support these two wonderful stars throughout the next generation of pole fitness and dance. 

Sarah who lives in Taunton is a Pole Fitness and dance instructor at Studio 22 and the new doubles partner of Bendy Kate who took first position in the Doubles category also on Saturday – Bendy already an accomplished performer, who won the doubles category also last year with her doubles partner Kate Johnston.  Bendy Kate as she is well known to her friends and colleagues,  as seen on this year’s semi finals, Got to Dance, hosted by Davina McCall, narrowly missed the crown with her innovative and creative moves and routine just disastrously slipped out of one of her challenging moves – needless to say she never disgraced herself, Bendy truly is an inspiration to thousands of pole dance followers throughout the nation and represents pole fitness in her unique and creative way.

 

The competition also saw support from Sarah Honeywell,  CBeeBies TV presenter – Sarah herself an ex gymnast, acrobatic aerialist and contortionist, had a pole fitness lessons from Kay last year, gaining our concept straight away, Sarah is equally excited about the innovative creation of moves around the pole for fun, empowerment and fitness and maybe one day in her very busy schedule, may take to the RPole again. – we hope so.

 

Sarah Scott, Bendy and Nico will all go on to Switzerland this year to represent the UK in the World Pole Dance Championships on November 10th  - www.worldpoledance.com
